WHAT IS Vitamin D?
Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, muscle function, teeth & immune system.
Vitamin D also contributes to normal absorption/utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, to normal blood calcium levels and has a role in the process of cell division.
How it works:
They are a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for increasing the intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphate and for many other biological effects.
In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).
The main natural source of the vitamin is the synthesis of cholecalciferol in the lower layers of the epidermis through a chemical reaction dependent on exposure to sunlight (specifically UVB radiation). Cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol can be taken from the diet and from dietary supplements. Only a few foods, such as the meat of fatty fish, naturally contain significant amounts of vitamin D.
Vitamin D from the skin synthesis, is not biologically active.
It is activated by two steps of the proteolytic enzyme hydroxylation, one in the liver and one in the kidneys. Since vitamin D can be synthesized in sufficient amounts by most mammals if exposed to adequate sunlight,
